As Country Manager for Ultrapolymers Ireland, Jeff Hobbins has over 20 years’ experience in polymer distribution and technical support. Since 2003, Jeff has supported Ireland’s medtech sector with material selection, compliance, production and supply chain security. He is also a big Munster Rugby supporter, but don’t hold that against him!
As the Medical Technology Ireland Expo returns to Galway on 24th & 25th September, the spotlight is once again on Ireland and its influence on the world’s medical device industry. There are some significant topics which keep coming up in discussions we’re having with manufacturers both in Ireland and across Europe. From navigating PFAS and PVC regulation changes to tackling supply chain risk and the uncertainty around Europe’s petrochemical industry, these conversations are becoming more urgent and clearly highlights more than ever the need for collaboration.
The Ultrapolymers Ireland team is here to listen to the issues that are affecting you daily. We’re not just here to offer you solutions for today but also to find a solution fit for you and your products future.
There are so many questions to consider. What does sustainability really mean for medtech materials? And what role will Ireland play in driving circularity in sustainable medical device development? How can we future-proof supply chains in an unpredictable global landscape? I will try to tackle some of these below but if you’re attending the show, Ultrapolymers would love to meet with you, chat through your challenges, explore new materials, rethink product designs, or just want to talk rugby and regulation over a coffee.
What's changing in the world of MedTech materials?
Ireland continues to be a global leader in medical device manufacturing. But with increasing pressure around sustainability, regulatory reform, and supply chain resilience, the question isn’t just about material performance but instead is it the right overall solution for the product.
· Are your current materials future-proof?
· How are you preparing for PFAS regulations and PVC phase-outs?
· What alternatives are available that meet medtech standards without compromising performance?
These are the conversations we’re having with customers every day. And we’d love to hear your perspective.
PFAS & PVC Replacement: What better time than now?
PFAS and PVC have long been staples in MedTech applications however the landscape is shifting. With growing scrutiny and potential bans, especially in the UK and EU, manufacturers are asking:
· What are PFAS and why are they being restricted?
· What are the best PFAS alternatives for medical use?
· Are there sustainable alternatives to PVC that still meet regulatory and functional requirements?
Ultrapolymers is actively working with suppliers and customers to identify viable PVC replacement materials and PFAS-free solutions. If you’re exploring options, let’s talk.
Supply Chain: Global Risk to Local Resilience
The importance of supply chain management has never been clearer. Between tariff uncertainty, global logistics disruptions, and volatility in Europe’s petrochemical sector, the stakes are high.
· What does supply chain optimisation look like in your business?
· How are you managing supply chain challenges in medtech?
· What risks are emerging in global trade—and how can we mitigate them together?
At Ultrapolymers Ireland, our local warehousing and technical support help reduce lead times, improve flexibility, and ensure continuity for critical applications.
Petrochemicals & Circular Economy: What's next?
Europe’s petrochemical industry is undergoing a transformation. Circular economy principles are gaining traction, but the path forward isn’t always clear.
· What trends are shaping the future of Europe’s petrochemical sector?
· How can medtech manufacturers align with circular economy goals?
· What impact will tariff uncertainty have on material sourcing and innovation?
We believe collaboration is key, across suppliers, converters, OEMs, and regulators. Let’s explore what’s possible, together.
